About SD Discovery Center Summer Programs

    Join us for hands-on fun that will engage, excite and inspire your children this summer.   SD Discovery Center members receive a discount and many of programs offer scholarships. You can also apply for Kids Helping Kids funds. Please contact us at 224-8295 for more information.

To Register:

  1. On-line: Beginning April 12 at 12:01AM log onto www.pierreparkandrec.com. MEMBERS: Please contact the SD Discovery for your discount code.
     
  2. In-Person: Walk-In registration will be held at the SD Discovery Center on May 15; 9-Noon.
     
  3. You may also register in person any time after that date by stopping in to the City Recreation office at the YMCA.

  4. Registration Reminders:
    • Registration in on a “first-come-first-served” basis. Class sizes are limited so register early. If a class is filled, your child’s name will automatically be placed on a waiting list. If enough names are on the list, afternoon classes will be offered.
    • Become a Discovery Center member and receive a discount on all summer classes.
    • United Way Booster Funds and Wal-Mart Funds are available upon request.
    • Snacks served at the Discovery Center will not contain peanuts. Please inform us of any food allergies when you register your child.

Club Invention

Club Invention is four days spent inventing ways to solve three different challenges.  At Club Invention you will:

  • Locate hidden Viking treasure.
  • Build a land sled using recyclable materials to race in an extreme obstacle course.
  • Reinvent old playground favorites to give traditional games a modern twist!
  • Led by local teachers with high school and college age camp counselors, this summer adventure is tailor made for the child entering grades 1 - 6 who loves to tinker and build.  See the Club Invention Public Service Announcement on You Tube

    Curious Kids!

     A Bugs’s Life
    Date: June 9; 10-Noon
    Fee: members: $10; non-members: $12(tax included)
    Ages: 5-7
    Location: SD Discovery Center
    Limit: max. 25; min. 5
    Hooray for honeybees, butterflies, beetles….and even spiders! Come along as we take a close look at all things creepy and crawly. Sing songs, read stories, make an insect headband, create a yummy buggy snack and hunt for bugs in the park.

    Blow It Up! 101
    Date: June 16; 10-Noon
    Fee: members: $12; non-members: $18(tax included)
    Ages: 6-10
    Location: SD Discovery Center
    Limit: max. 25; min. 5
    Dry Ice, Coke, Baking Soda and Alka Seltzer are all ingredients that will be used in this fun, yet SAFE class!

    Get Set to be a Vet
    Date: June 23; 10-Noon
    Fee: members: $10; non-members: $12(tax included)
    Ages: 6-11
    Location: SD Discovery Center
    Limit: max. 30; min. 5
    Bring your favorite stuffed pet to this fun class and learn how to take care of it--and your own pet at home, meet Vicky Wilkey, a real veterinarian.

    Giddy Up! Horse Camp
    Date: June 30; 8:15-4pm
    Fee: members: $70; non-members: $84 (tax included)
    Ages: 9-13
    Location: Meet at the SD Discovery Center and travel by River Cities Transit to the Melvin Ranch
    Limit: max. 12; min. 5
    Enjoy a fun full of horses at the Dakota Stars Riding Center. Horse science, safety, equipment and lots of riding are all part of this exciting day. Appropriate for novices but still fun for those with experience. Please sign the on-line release form and print the notarized form. This form will need to be notarized by a licensed notary public and returned the day of camp.

    Boys in the Kitchen
    Date: July 14; 10-Noon

    Ages: 8-14

    It’s time for the BOYS to take over the kitchen! Learn the basic use of kitchen tools, experiment with some cool recipes and create some tasty treats to share with the class.

    Paper Airplane Workshop
    Date: July 21; 10-Noon
    Fee: members: $10; non-members: $12 (tax included)
    Ages: 6-8
    Location: SD Discovery Center
    Limit: max. 25; min. 5
    Build paper airplanes, Frisbees, boomerangs, helicopters, kites and other things that fly. Fly them from our balcony and outdoors. Explore the physics and magic of flight.

    Slimy Science
    Date: July 28; 10-Noon
    Fee: members: $14; non-members: $16 (tax included)
    Ages: 6-9
    Location: SD Discovery Center
    Limit: max. 25; min. 5
    Slime is important and interesting stuff! Machines need it to run, we wash with it, and we even eat it. Make and experiment with different kinds of slime and bring some home.

    Outdoor Adventure Camp

    Outdoor Adventure
    Attention boys and girls! Get outdoors and have some fun this summer! Discover the fun of kayaking and fishing on our local waters. Mountain bike on La Framboise Island and go geo-caching to find a hidden treasure in Steamboat Park. Make a healthy snack each week, learn to kick box and enjoy other fun activities. Receive an Outdoor Adventure bag.

    Outdoor Adventure EXTREME
    This class is for older youth who are looking for a bit more EXTREME and challenging adventure! Go on a kayak expedition down the Missouri River, fish for salmon on the Oahe Reservoir, go on an extreme mountain bike ride and climb a rock wall/ropes course. Outdoor cooking will be a part of each experience. Receive an Outdoor Adventure bag.

    Pre-School Science Fridays

    Little ones are natural scientists. Encourage their great observation skills and abundant curiosity with outdoor experiences
    designed just for them.

    Grow as We Grow June 11
    Explore the life cycles of butterflies, frogs, puppies…..and you! Find out how insects, reptiles and mammals grow and change throughout their lives. Role play the life changes of a butterfly, make a chrysalis to take home and enjoy a delicious caterpillar snack.

    Whose Habitat is That? June 18
    Get to know South Dakota’s wildlife and what habitats they call home through games and hands-on activities. Learn what wildlife and people need to survive. Feed the fish, build an outdoor fort and go on a habitat hike outdoors to discover signs of wildlife.

    Fishing Fun June 25
    Let’s throw in a line and catch a bunch of fun at the Discovery Center! Have a blast as we learn all about the fish that live in our local waters. Experiment with Japanese gyotaku-fish printing, meet the fish that live in our pond and feed them a treat, play some fun games and enjoy a snack.

    Hide and Seek
    July 9
    Explore the predator/prey relationship and how animals use camouflage and other adaptations to survive in the wild. Touch real animal pelts and skulls, play some outdoor games and make a camo vest to wear home.

    Life on a Farm July 16
    Squeals will be heard by all as we meet some real farm animals and learn what farm life is all about.

    Teddy Bears Picnic July 23
    Bring along your favorite stuffed bear to share in this fun day! Discover how real bears live in the wild. What do they like to eat? Where do they sleep? What do their tracks look like? Play some bear games, have a bear snack and even make a bear to take home.

    KidVenture Camps

    Kids in the Kitchen Camp
    Date: June 21-24; 10-Noon
    Fee: members $55; non-members $66: (tax included)
    Ages: 9-14
    Location: Riggs High School Homec Room
    Limit: max. 15; min. 5
    This awesome workshop welcomes boys and girls to have some hands-on, up-to-your-elbows fun while learning important kitchen skills. Participants will have a budget (even cut coupons) to shop for snacks and meals that they will prepare themselves. A trip to the super market with a registered dietitian will be a lesson in delicious, healthy food shopping. Each day will provide cooking opportunities with the final as day a celebration with parents invited to enjoy the fruits of our labors. Get Kids in the Kitchen apron. Wear closed-toe shoes.

    Lego Mindstorm Robotics Camp
    Date: July5-7; 10-Noon
    Fee: members: $20; non-members: $24 (tax included)
    Ages: 8-12
    Location: SD Discovery Center
    Limit: max. 20, min. 5
    Learn to build and program a computerized robot that really works! Working with a partner, you will build the robot, hook up the “brain” of the robot to a computer and start the programming. You will program your robot to follow a planned course using touch, sound and light sensors.

    Badge Days

    Space Explorer
    Friday June 4 10AM - 12PM
    Ages: 7-10
    Take a tour around the stars in our portable planetarium, Star Lab, and make your own constellation projector.
    Fee: $10 per child
    Limit: max. 25; min. 5

    North, South, East and West
    Friday Aug. 6; 10AM-12PM
    Ages: 10-12
    A lesson on Geo-caching, map reading and how to use a compass is what this badge is all about.
    Fee: $10 per child
    Limit: max. 25; min. 5

    Discovery Center Badge Day Policy:

    Registration is required for all badge day events. Leaders or parents must contact the Discovery Center to register by noon on the day prior to the Badge Day. Call 605-224-8295
    • Programs will be held at the Discovery Center, 805 W. Sioux Avenue, Pierre SD
    • Cost for each Badge day is $10 per girl (tax included). Scholarship funds are available for girls in Pierre/Ft. Pierre troops upon request.
    • Badge days are open to scout troop as well as the general public.
    • Tennis shoes are required.

    Kids Helping Kids Camps are funded by Turner Youth Fund through the Healthy Community, Healthy Youth Initiative.



    KIDS HELPING KIDS INFO:
    • Scholarships are available for all camps upon request.
    • Approved helmets will be worn in all horse camps.
    • Excessive wind may alter some camp plan.
    • All horse camps will require two parental release forms. One of these forms will need to be notarized by a licensed notary public. These forms are available at the SD Discovery Center, at the Pierre Park & Rec office at the YMCA
    • All Kayak camps require a release form. These forms are available at the SD Discovery Center, at the Pierre Park & Rec office at the YMCA, Steamboat Game & Fish or may be downloaded (requires Adobe Reader): Paddling Agreement
